Louis Hughes was an enslaved African American who lived in the United States in the 19th century. He was born in Virginia in 1832 and was sold multiple times before eventually being bought by a family in Alabama. As a young man, Hughes worked in various roles on the plantation, including as a field hand, house servant, and carriage driver.
Despite being forced to work long hours under difficult conditions, Hughes was able to secretly teach himself how to read and write. He also became involved in the underground railroad, helping other enslaved people escape to freedom.
After the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, Hughes moved to Detroit, Michigan and later settled in Canada. He wrote an autobiography, "Thirty Years a Slave: From Bondage to Freedom," which was published in 1897 and provides a detailed account of his experiences as an enslaved person in the South.
